I asked my 10 year-old what she had been watching on Netflix lately. I already knew because I check in on her recently watched list from time to time. But, she’s getting older and her tastes are changing. So, I’m trying to be cool and watch some new things that she’s into.
When she was younger, I was the coolest guy ever. Now, let’s just say, if she could carry a closet around and put me in it every time we are in public… She would!!! Since I’m not cool, I inquired about what the cool kids are watching these days and here are some of the examples she gave me.
Saved By The Bell - This iconic light comedy focuses on the lives, crushes and pranks of six Bayside High School students. Headed by cool kid leader Zach, the six are reminiscent of modern day “Archie” characters. Bayside High principal Richard Belding tries to keep the gang in check. I have to admit, it’s nice to finally have someone who understands how underrated the “Zack Attack” was.
Chopped – Here’s the premise…Â Four chefs call on their culinary skills as they face off against one another and prepare a spectacular three-course meal consisting of an appetizer, entree and dessert. The catch? In each round, they have to use all the ingredients the show provides them, no matter how odd they might be (Gummi Bears, anyone?). At the end of each course, a panel of three guest judges “chops” one chef who fails to measure up in terms of taste, presentation and creativity. The last chef standing takes home bragging rights and a cool $10,000. I love the fact that this generation are becoming foodies and are really interested in what they eat.
Disney’s Hercules - The son of the Greek Gods Zeus and Hera is stripped of his immortality as an infant and must become a true hero in order to reclaim it. Hercules is raised on Earth and retains his god-like strength, but when he discovers his immortal heritage Zeus tells him that to return to Mount Olympus he must become a true hero. Hercules becomes a famous hero with the help of his friend Pegasus and his personal trainer, Phil the satyr. Hercules battles monsters, Hades and the Titans, but it is his self-sacrifice to rescue his love Meg which makes him a true hero. For my money, this has some of the best music of ANY Disney film. I really love the Motown vibe. It’s nice to know she’s still into Disney movies.
It’s pretty cool to see how well rounded her Netflix choices are. She may be getting older, but the “Cool Kid” will always be my little girl.
