Summertime is finally here, the kids are out of school and my daughter has been begging me to make one of her favorite recipes, indoor S’mores. I bet you didn’t know… You don’t always need a campfire to enjoy S’mores!
My 10 year-old asked me about where S’mores came from. I honestly did not have an answer for her. So we did some research and this is what we found:
The first recorded version of the recipe can be found in the publication Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts of 1927. Although the exact origin is unclear, reports on the group from as early as 1925 describe them. S’more is a mash up of the phrase “some more”. Though recipes for “Some Mores” are in various Girl Scout publications until at least 1973. However, a 1956 recipe uses the exact name (S’Mores), and lists the ingredients as “a sandwich of two graham crackers, toasted marshmallow and 1/2 chocolate bar”. In 1968 Clarice Nelms provided the following recipe: Place a square of milk chocolate on a graham cracker. Toast a marshmallow and put on top of the chocolate, then a second graham cracker on top of the toasted marshmallow and squeeze and you will want “s’more”.Â
Check out Hershey’s.com for even more information about this beloved dessert.
Here in South Florida we get lots of beautiful sunny days, but as we get closer to July we also hit rainy season. Sometimes we just can’t get outside to make our favorite summer treat. I came up with this recipe a few years ago so we could have our S’mores rain or shine!
We headed down to our local Walmart to pick up supplies. They must have known we were coming because they had everything we needed in one convenient place. You gotta love one stop shopping!
This is a great recipe for summer parties. I hope you and your family love it as much as mine has. Enjoy!
