April 28th is National “Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work” Day. Since I own my own business and work from home I decided that I would let my daughter choose a recipe and we would make it together. A lot of my work involves making fun recipes that everyone can enjoy. It ended up being perfect because my daughter has been begging me to make one of her favorite recipes, S’mores Dip. I bet you didn’t know… You don’t always need a campfire to enjoy S’mores!
She asked me where S’mores came from. I honestly did not have an answer for her. So we did some research and this is what we found:
The first recorded version of the recipe can be found in the publication Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts of 1927. Although the exact origin is unclear, reports on the group from as early as 1925 describe them. S’more is a mash up of the phrase “some more”. Though recipes for “Some Mores” are in various Girl Scout publications until at least 1973. However, a 1956 recipe uses the exact name (S’Mores), and lists the ingredients as “a sandwich of two graham crackers, toasted marshmallow and 1/2 chocolate bar”. In 1968 Clarice Nelms provided the following recipe: Place a square of milk chocolate on a graham cracker. Toast a marshmallow and put on top of the chocolate, then a second graham cracker on top of the toasted marshmallow and squeeze and you will want “s’more”.Â
We always make our S’mores Dip with HERSHEY’S products. My grandmother used HERSHEY’S in her recipes, as did my mother and now I’m passing that onto my daughter. HERSHEY’S wants families to create “Hello Happy” moments. These are happy memories that that you create no matter if everything is perfect or not. Here in South Florida we get lots of beautiful sunny days, but as we get closer to summer we also hit rainy season. Sometimes we just can’t get outside to make our favorite summer treat. I came up with this recipe a few years ago so we could have our S’mores rain or shine! That’s our “Hello Happy” moment.
