For years, people have been telling me that I needed to visit San Antonio. A couple of months ago, I finally got the chance to visit this amazing city and I was not disappointed. Here are a few of my must-sees in San Antonio.
The Alamo
When I was a kid, Pee Wee’s Big Adventure was one of my favorite movies. The scene at The Alamo where they sang, “Deep in the heart of Texas” always made me laugh uncontrollably. Visiting had been on my bucket list for a long time. Here’s a bit of trivia for all of you history buffs. The Alamo was originally known as Misión San Antonio de Valero. It is part of the San Antonio Missions World Heritage Site in San Antonio. It’s open Monday-Sunday from 9am-5:30pm and closed Christmas Eve and Day.
River Walk
I had heard a lot about the River Walk in San Antonio. It was the one place that everyone insisted that I had to visit. It has everything! Great restaurants, a ton of shopping and hotels line the river. In May 2011, the River Walk was extended by several miles to extend from Downtown to Mission Espada which is on the city’s south side. The addition was named the “Mission Reach”. They also made a lot of trail improvements to support both hiking and biking. The San Antonio Spurs have had all of their victory parades on the River Walk. That’s a lot of parades!
Josephine Street
Considered by many to be one of the best restaurants in San Antonio, it might be one of the best places I have eaten in America. Located close to the Pearl Brewery, this Texas Roadhouse is simply amazing. There is always a wait, but it is worth it. Grab a couple of Texas beers while you’re waiting. I went old school and ordered Lone Star and Shiner Bock.
They have steaks, chicken fried steak and catfish. The menu is written in chalk on the wall and they always feature a daily special. I took our waitresses advice and ordered the catfish. It was cooked perfectly! Crunchy on the outside and tender and flaky on the inside. Make Josephine Street your first stop in San Antonio. Trust me on this one.
JW Marriot San Antonio
This property is gigantic and truly has something for everyone. It’s only a 3-minute walk of TPC San Antonio golf course and about 16 miles from Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch and 17 miles from Natural Bridge Caverns. There’s also a newly updated 6-acre water park, an adults-only pool, a spa and a fitness center, as well as a business center and 265,000 sq ft of meeting space. I drove there in my sweet 2017 Toyota Tacoma. You have to drive a truck when you’re in Texas!
Also, they have a lot of great restaurants to choose from. My buddies and I were big fans of their sports bar on steroids, High Velocity. I was won over almost immediately by their Texas sized onion rings. Notice the entire wall of televisions to the right. It’s a great place to watch your favorite teams.
I had such an amazing time! If you’re looking for a place to go this summer, whether it’s a family trip or a guy’s getaway, San Antonio is the place for you!
