I recently had the amazing pleasure of attending the “Orange Carpet” premier of Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black. The acclaimed series is in its third season and has already been picked up for a fourth. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the show (there can’t be many of you left) here is a quick description.
The series revolves around Piper Chapman(Taylor Schilling), a woman living in New York City, who is sentenced to 15 months in a women’s federal prison. She has been convicted of transporting a suitcase full of drug money to her now former girlfriend Alex Vause (Laura Prepon), an international drug smuggler. The offense had occurred ten years prior to the start of the series, and in that time Piper had moved on to a quiet, law-abiding life among New York’s upper middle class, so her sudden and unexpected arrest seriously disrupts her relationships with her fiancé and her family.
In prison, Piper is reunited with Alex (who named Piper in her trial, resulting in Piper’s arrest), and they re-examine their relationship and deal with their fellow prisoners. The show often shows flashbacks of significant events from various inmates’ pasts. These flashbacks typically explain how the inmate came to be in prison or otherwise further develop the character’s backstory.
Thanks to Netflix, not only did I get a chance to visit New York City (love that town), I also got to hang out behind the scenes at the first ever OrangeCon.
The fan support for Orange Is The New Black was in full force! They have a rabid fan base that REALLY loves the show. Here are a “few” of them that were waiting for autographs.
Eventually, the stars showed up and the one thing that I noticed, was how grateful they were to their fans. I think they were more excited to be there than the fans were.
Laura Prepon – “Alex Vause”
Uzo Aduba – “Crazy Eyes”
Dascha Polanco – “Dayanara Diaz”
Natasha Lyonne – “Nicky Nichols”
After a couple of hours of interviews, autographs and many selfies, the cast engaged in a panel discussion with the audience. It was really cool to see the cast interact with the crowd. They were very relaxed and everyone had a great time. Laura Prepon even gave out some hugs to one lucky fan. I wanted to ask her for one… I like hugs!!!
It was an amazing night and the entire cast was funny, engaging and very proud of the work they do on the show. They were so thankful to the crowd, they even got the CEO of Netflix to stream the series 3 hours before it was set to debut. Netflix is a company that absolutely cares about their viewers and proved it that night.
Have You Watched Season 3 Of Orange Is The New Black?
