I’m a big fan of movies. Love ’em!! The last few years though, I’ve noticed a trend. It’s really hard to find films that the entire family can enjoy together. There are a few exceptions every year, but it’s seems to be becoming rarer and rarer. I recently had the opportunity to see a screening of the new film “GREATER”. I really wasn’t sure what to expect… I was completely blown away by it! GREATER is a great movie for all ages!
Here is a brief synopsis:
“Brandon Burlsworth is perhaps the greatest walk-on in the history of college football. Brandon dreamed of playing for the Arkansas Razorbacks, but was told he wasn’t good enough to play Division I ball. Undeterred, Brandon took a risk and walked on in 1994. Written off by fellow teammates and coaches, Brandon displayed dogged determination in the face of staggering odds. The awkward kid who once was an embarrassment to his teammates and an annoyance to his coaches, ended up becoming the most respected player in the history of the program, changing the lives of all he touched.”
I’m a big football fan and I was familiar with Brandon Burlsworth’s story. Don’t worry you don’t have to be a football fan or even know one thing about it to enjoy this film. The story of Brandon is universal in the fact that we all have dreams and we all would like to live them. He was able to put his wants into actions and touched the lives of everyone around him. It’s a rare person that can’t say that. But, what GREATER tries/succeeds to convey to the audience is that we all have the power to achieve our dreams. It’s about not being afraid of being yourself, hard work and it’s about having strength of character. As a parent, I was happy to see how these themes were prevalent throughout the movie.
The film hit me in a really deep place. I asked my wife to take a picture of me while I was watching the movie. My only request was that she didn’t tell me when she was going to take it. She captured both enjoyment and contemplation.
I began to reflect a bit on my own life and the choices I had made the last few years. I worked in the bar business for almost 16 years. As I approached forty, I realized that the job was leaving me empty. I rarely saw my wife and daughter. I missed Easter’s, Halloween’s and every other sort of event that involved family time. I was done living like that and I wanted a change. When I decided to live my dream, I shot for the moon. I wanted to own my own business, see the world with my family and never miss another holiday or valuable family time. It seemed crazy and I knew a lot of hard work would be required, but I was steadfast in my goal. Well, three years later and I have achieved all of those things. Here’s one of my favorite pictures of my daughter and I traveling through Europe together.
Brandon’s story resonated with me and I think it will resonate with you.
The cast features Chris Severio (Brandon Burlsworth), Leslie Easterbrook (Barbara Burlsworth), Michael Parks (Leo Burlsworth) and Neal McDonough (Marty Burlsworth).
The entire cast is great, but especially McDonough, who has been one of my favorite character actors for years. He also helped bring this story to life by also serving as an Executive Producer for GREATER.
If you are looking for a family film with heart and a great message behind it or you just want to go to the theater to see a good flick… GREATER is for you.
