A few years ago, my daughter came home from school and boldly announced that she wanted to celebrate Chinese New Year. She had learned about some of the traditions and history that day in class, something about it really intrigued her. So my wife and I sat down with her and decided to plan our very first Chinese New Year celebration at home.
Here we are, 4 years later and we still enjoy celebrating. We usually have some form of dumplings and a authentic Chinese vegetable salad. But, this year we were looking for something different to add to our small feast. I decided to visit my local Walmart and try to find something we would all enjoy. After a few minutes, I came across something that looked perfect for us.
I came across Tai Pei®frozen appetizers. I had never tried them before, but I had heard they were quite tasty. I picked up a box of their Shrimp Egg Rolls and a box of their Mini Chicken Spring Rolls. They have a myriad of great choices including, chicken, veggie and pork egg rolls. Also try the mini spicy chicken egg rolls and mini vegetable spring rolls. Every box comes with its own delicious dipping sauce as well!
They were very tasty, restaurant quality in fact and fit quite nicely into our festivities.
Here are some of the things we like to do for the Chinese New Year:
New Year’s Eve Dinner
The New Year’s Eve dinner is the most important dinner for the Chinese. This is usually the family reunion dinner, especially for those with family members away from home. Chinese vegetable salad and fish are served. Dumplings are the most important dish in Northern China. These dishes signify prosperity. The majority of Chinese will have New Year’s Eve dinner at home instead of a restaurant. The Tai Pei® egg rolls and spring rolls were a nice change of pace for us. Here is a great recipe for authentic Chinese vegetable salad. We also like to make some authentic Chinese tea as well.
Red Packets
The Red packet is a red envelope with money in it. The amount in the envelope can range from one to a few thousand dollars. Usually the red packet is given by adults and elderly to young children in the New Year days. We exchange them amongst each other… I’d like a few fresh twenties to start my New Year! It was believed that the money in the red packet will suppress the evil from the children, keep them healthy, and give them a long life.
Chinese New Year is on Thursday, February 19
It marks the start of the Year of the Sheep in the Chinese zodiac.
Be sure to follow Tai Pei®  on Twitter, Pinterest and check out their Facebook page to get a special coupon in the tradition of “The Red Envelope” (while supplies last)!
