The Tapoco Lodge, a hidden gem in North Carolina, that is nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains. It offers a unique and unforgettable experience for visitors. This historic lodge, located on the Ronnie Milsap Highway in Robbinsville, North Carolina, is surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty and offers a range of activities and amenities for guests to enjoy.
A Brief History…
The Tapoco Lodge Historic District encompasses a historic mountain lodge and resort in Robbinsville, North Carolina. The lodge was developed in the 1930s by Tapoco, formerly the Tallahassee Power Company, which developed hydroelectric power projects in the area. The lodge and associated cabins were built to provide housing for Tapoco employees working in the area. The main lodge, a 2-1/2 story Colonial Revival structure, was built in 1930, and the facilities were gradually enlarged during the next decade to include a number of guest cabins. Around 1950 a theater, guard house, and other utility buildings were added to the complex. Gazebos and tennis courts were added in the late 1990s
The Tapoco Lodge has retained its rustic charm while also providing modern comforts. The lodge features cozy rooms and cabins that are tastefully decorated and equipped with all the necessary amenities for a comfortable stay. The staff was welcoming, knowledgeable and truly accommodating. My wife walked in and immediately started to warm ourselves by the fire… we felt right at home as soon as we checked in.

Whether you choose a room in the main lodge or a private cabin, you can expect stunning views of the surrounding mountains and rivers. Amazing Food Options…
Food lovers will be delighted by the dining options at the Tapoco Lodge. The Cheoha Dining Room is a wonderful fine dining option. Newly renovated, my wife and I got a tour while they were doing a soft opening. It offers a breakfast and dinner menu that showcases the flavors of the region. From fresh seafood to hearty mountain fare, there is something to satisfy every palate.
At the Tapoco Tavern, guests can also enjoy their meals on the outdoor patio, overlooking the river and surrounded by nature. A fantastic menu that is all about comfort. The wings and Burgers are stand outs, but don’t be afraid to grab some local app’s (Fresh Trout Nuggets?!) Yes, please!!!
But, I have to be honest. The wood-fired pizza at the Laurel Lounge is just divine. It is some of the best pizza that I have ever had… and I’ve eaten the “Best” pizza in the world in Naples, Italy. The crust is charred, chewy, savory and crisp all at the same time. The toppings fresh, the sauce has a wonderful combination of sweet, savory, spicy, bold and incredible depth. Once you add the plentiful amounts of cheese… your tastebuds won’t be the same.
The rustic charm of Tapoco Lodge provided the perfect backdrop for our pizza dining experience, with its warm ambiance and picturesque views of the river and mountains. As we finished the last slice, we were left with full hearts and satisfied appetites, grateful for the moments of togetherness that a simple pizza dinner at Tapoco Lodge had brought us.
