This summer has come and gone, too quickly like always, but I got the chance to check out some really great films.

Here is my list of this summers Top 5 films:

1. Snowpiercer – A mind bending sci-fi film that takes place on a train that travels around the globe. Captain America himself, Chris Evans, leads a revolt against the class system that has developed on the speeding train that holds the only survivors of a global climate-change experiment gone wrong. Director Joon-ho Bong has created the most original sci-fi film since Blade Runner.

2. Guardians Of The Galaxy – The best Marvel film yet… I know, start throwing things at me. A big sci-fi adventure, with an even bigger sense of humor. A perfect cast, an amazing script and director James Gunn had enough balls to make a fanboy film that actually delivered. Also, you get a Howard the Duck cameo, damn near perfect!

3. Boyhood – Director Richard Linklater took 13 years to shoot this film. Every few years filming his cast, especially focusing on newcomer Ellar Coltrane, designing a film that is both realistic and jaw droppingly ahead of its time.

4. X-Men: Days Of Future Past - A “loose” reboot of the popular series. Director Bryan Singer brought the old and the new together and delivered the best installment since X-Men 2. Hugh Jackman is the anchor to the film and the next installments will be working off of a clean slate. I’m already looking forward to X-Men: Apocalypse and the introduction of Channing Tatum’s Gambit.

5. 22 Jump Street – Usually comedy sequels are taxing and almost a chore to watch. But, Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum deliver a dynamite follow up that surpasses the first movie in laughs and keeps reminding the audience that they’re in on the jokes as well. 22 Jump Street admits that it’s a sequel and then revels in it. Deftly written and it had possibly the best villain of the summer in actress Jillian Bell, she is truly comic gold!

Walt Disney Animation is going in a new direction with the upcoming film Big Hero 6. Based on a Marvel Comic, it’s a futuristic action comedy from the creators of Frozen and Wreck-It Ralph. The story revolves around a special bond that develops between Baymax (voice of Scott Adsit), a plus-sized inflatable robot, and prodigy Hiro Hamada (voice of Ryan Potter). 

When a devastating event befalls the city of San Fransokyo and catapults Hiro into the midst of danger, he turns to Baymax and his close friends adrenaline junkie Go Go Tomago (voice of Jamie Chung), neatnik Wasabi (voice of Damon Wayans Jr.), chemistry whiz Honey Lemon (voice of Genesis Rodriguez) and fanboy Fred (voice of T.J. Miller). Determined to uncover the mystery, Hiro transforms his friends into a band of high-tech heroes called “Big Hero 6.”

Big Hero 6 opens nationwide November 7th.

The summer movie season has come and gone, so it’s time to start talking about next summer. The most highly anticipated film has got to be The Avengers: Age Of Ultron. It seems like Marvel has taken over Hollywood over the last few years and next summer won’t be any different. This film is expected to possibly be the biggest opening weekend in movie history.

The good people at Empire and director Joss Whedon (Simply one of the most AMAHZING writers and directors EVER!!!) have shared some new photos from the set of the newest Avengers film. Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye looks like he’s got a cool new outfit (Alright… It’s a costume). Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr. look like they’re just sending out the “smart guy” vibe and last but not least, we have the brother sister duo of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Aaron Taylor-Johnson has a lot of pressure on him because Evan Peters Quicksilver damn near stole X-Men: Days Of Future Past and has been signed to reprise the role in X-Men: Apocalypse.

I’m already excited about this flick, but alas, I shall wait patiently.

The Avengers: Age Of Ultron opens May 1, 2015

 

Tomorrow is the big day, Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy opens in theaters everywhere tomorrow. It’s crazy, I’ve been covering this movie for over a year. I’ve seen the original sketch work turn into filmed scenes and they went from having no cast to having one of the most crazy, eclectic casts in recent movie memory. The early buzz is that “Guardians…” is incredible and unlike any Marvel film we’ve seen yet… BRING IT ON BROTHER!!!!

Here are some cool extras to get you through until tomorrow. There is a really cool Lego-inspired video and a featurette with Vin Diesel doing some voice work in Portuguese and Russian as fan favorite Groot.

The 2014 Comic-Con started out with a BIG BANG and I’m not talking about Dr. Sheldon Cooper. Unless you’ve been living under a rock or haven’t surfed the web in 9 months, most people are quite aware that Ben Affleck was cast as Batman and people went bat-sh** (Everyone loves a good pun). What was going to be a Superman sequel, turned into Batman vs. Superman and then that turned into Batman vs. Superman: Dawn Of Justice which is going to roll into a Justice League Of America movie.

Still with me?!

Yesterday at Comic-Con, a promo shot of Ben Affleck in the Batman cowl was revealed… it quieted the naysayers VERY quickly. He looks really cool! I would go out on a limb and say he looks better than Christian Bale and has more of that lantern jawed toughness that I’ve always envisioned for Batman. I know, how dare I speak ill of the “holy” Dark Knight Trilogy… here, see for yourself.

I told you he looks awesome!

Now, let’s just pray the movie is going to be good. I tend to think director Zack Snyder is on the right track and he’s made some really good casting choices.
