“What were you born to do?”
That’s kind of a loaded question. If you had asked me about the time this picture was taken, I would probably have said I was cool with just hanging out with my granddad and maybe catching a nap later.
But, things change and so do we. The ten year-old Rick would’ve told you he was born to be the starting catcher for the Atlanta Braves. Even though I’m a lifelong Cubs fan, Dale Murphy was my idol. I got the chance to meet him as a child and it is a memory that I truly cherish.
As I got older I realized that professional baseball was not in my future, so I decided to scale down my expectations and discovered I was born to be a award winning actor/musician. That actually was a pretty amazing journey. I did record and tour as a professional musician and I did get a chance to act in some films and logged many hours on the stage. But, even after all that, I still wasn’t sure what I was born to do.
On June 11th, 2004 I figured out what I was born to do. My beautiful daughter came into the world and I understood that I was born to be a dad. Everything else up until then helped me become the man I was, but I was born to love this tiny little person. I was there to help her navigate life, discover all of her dreams and do something great!
Here’s a quick history:
President Franklin Roosevelt’s personal struggle with polio led him to create the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis at a time when polio was on the rise. Better known as the March of Dimes, the foundation established a polio patient aid program and funded research for vaccines developed by Jonas Salk, MD and Albert Sabin, MD. These vaccines effectively ended epidemic polio in the United States. The March of Dimes has led the way to discover the genetic causes of birth defects, to promote newborn screening, and to educate medical professionals and the public about best practices for healthy pregnancy.
Over the last 75 years they have been helping children discover what they were born to do.
Here’s a great gifting guide right in time for Mother’s and Father’s Day. Also, make sure to support companies such as KMart, Blue Rhino, Bon Ton and Mud Pie this Father’s Day as they help the March of Dimes realize their dream of giving every child the chance to do something great.
